Richard was the first black student in my Randolph classroom following Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka.  It was Mr Spears’s 4th grade classroom. I doubt that 4th graders cared much, but perhaps being overly cautious, I remember Mr Spear saying “Tomorrow we will have a black pupil joining us ; I expect each of you to treat him as you would other classmates.” That is all I recall of him personally but  I have carried his memory as I marched in Alabama in 1965 and to the present struggles.

I hope he had a good life
