In Memory

George W. Knowles

Report of George Knowles passing came to us from an official from the US State Department. He passed away in France, October 13, 2006 after a long battle with cancer. We are told that much of his career efforts at the State Department were aimed at improving understanding between Germans and Americans.

Memory by Jane Schendel Baum:

My husband and I kept pretty good contact with George and his wife Gail (they had two sons). We know that he was with the World Bank in NYC at first, then with the Trade Commission in DC, and ended his career as Consul General of the US in Duesseldorf, Germany. He was stationed in France, Great Britain, Belgium, and for a long time in Turkey.

George always liked gardening and planted his own gardens in London and Ankara.  He had happy memories of being on some family farm near Hutchinson KS.  His other hobby was collecting antiques. He and Gail had planned to spend part of their retirement in a pretty place in Normandy (  N. France), sadly he only had a few months to enjoy it.

George was one of those guys who you could quickly tell was alot smarter and more intellectual at that age than many of us; I am glad to read he had such a successful career with the State Department.

George was so much fun.  We had French class together and I'm not at all surprised at the choice of his career and his success in it.  He called to say hi just before our 25th reunion although he couldn't be there.  I was hoping he'd come to this one and I'm so sad to find out he's not with us anymore.
