- Loving daughter, sister, wife and mother passed away on February 7, 2008 in Four Lakes, WA. Her mother Thelma preceded her in death. Sherry Ann was born in Topeka, Kansas September 1, 1943. She graduated Topeka High School 1961. Sherry Ann obtained her Bachelor's degree from Emporia State University in 1966, and her Master's Degree MLS 1972, also from Emporia State University. She was most proud of her service to the United States Army from December 1968 to January 1970 as a Librarian, Phi Cat, South Vietnam. Sherry was the Library Director for the Yakima Indian Nation, Toppenish, WA from April 1980 to November 1986, where she expanded the index of oral history tapes, tribal historic photographs and documents. She worked to establish the Library as a Tribal and community resource; protected and preserved the Strongheart Collection; and acted as Librarian Stanley Smartlowit Junior and Senior High Schools. From December 1986 to present Sherry Ann was Library Director at Fairchild AFB, WA, 92d Services Squadron; actively promoted higher education to active duty military and their family members. She selected materials to support that effort. She acted as Proctor for numerous library patrons completing their education goals. She especially enjoyed hours spent with the Preschool story times. As an enthusiastic storyteller she kept the preschoolers enthralled, motivating them to begin reading on their own. Sherry was able to motivate many high school students to volunteer with the Children's Summer Reading Programs over the years. She witnessed more than one preschooler graduate high school and college. Her face would always light up when discussing one of "her" kids achieving degrees from universities. Sherry Ann was a gift to library patrons and co-workers, maintaining friendships that spanned decades and oceans. Surviving is her father Harold Hokanson of Topeka, Kansas; brother Richard (Donna) of Friends Wood, Texas; husband Chico Matta; and daughter Brandy Matta of Four Lakes, Washington.
