Johnny Joe was one of the best athletes I was ever associated with! I remember one spring afternoon, when I rode my bike to Gage Park for a baseball team tryout. We, the early arrivals, were all waiting for the thing to get rolling and the topic of discussion was Johnny. Had we all heard of this new kid in town named Johnny Nunley? He was a Texas state high jump champion and certainly it would be hard to make this team with a guy like that around.
