Carl Corona

Carl Corona, 71, passed away on Saturday, September 12, 2020 at Stormont Vail Hospital after a short battle with cancer.  He was born on December 7, 1948 in Des Moines, Iowa.

Carl graduated from Highland Park High School, Class of 1966.  Carl was very much involved with the local music community in the 1960’s, 70’, and 80’s.  He was a drummer for several bands and performed with future members of the Kansas rock group.  He was always proud of these associations and had many friends in the music field.  Carl spent most of his career working for the State of Kansas (42 Years).  He retired from the Department of Labor in 2009.

Carl spent much of his time after retirement managing booths in secondhand shops and enjoying his pets.  To supply his booths, he and Ellen were avid shoppers and “pickers” at antique stores, estate sales, and garage sales. He also loved caring for his dogs (Spike and Spirit), cat (Cruiser), and numerous fish.  A special passion in his life was his restored 1970 Plymouth Belvedere with which he was always tinkering.

Carl is survived by his wife, Ellen (together for 25 years); his mother Cruse Douthart; his sisters, Rebecca Bauman (Richard) and Darlene Morgan; his step children, Jeff Hale (Liz) of Lake Norman, NC, and Rob Janes of Charlotte, NC; five grandsons and one granddaughter; and numerous nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his father, Valentine O. Corona, and sisters Cindy Gilbert and Vivian Cozadd.

A celebration of life will be held at Gage Park in Topeka at the Steak Grill shelter area on September 26, 2020 from 6:00 PM - 10:00 PM.  Due to Covid 19, refreshments will not be provided, and masks and social distancing are required.

Memorial contributions may be made in Carl’s name to Helping Hands Humane Society, 5720 SE 21st St, Topeka, KS 66604 (hhhstopeka.org).
