Traverse City-Frederick C. Shier, 67, of Traverse City, formerly of Lansing, died Monday afternoon, June 10, 2013, at his home, after his hard-fought battle with pancreatic cancer. Fred was called home to be with the Lord he loved.
Born on September 28, 1945, in Lansing, he was one of four children born to the late Gordon and Mary (Mallek) Shier. On October 6, 1973, in Omena, he married the love of his life, the former Anne Therese Alger.
A proud veteran, Fred served his country in the medical corps of the United States Army during the Vietnam War. During that time, he received many decorations and citations.
Fred earned his Bachelors Degree in Education from Michigan State University. He taught elementary and junior high students at Living God Christian school for 11 years, sharing his passion for the English language with his students. He was employed by the United States Postal Service in Traverse City as a clerk for 27 years, where he dearly loved working with his co-workers.
Foremost he enjoyed family and found great delight and satisfaction in repairing cars for family or friends.
Fred is survived by his wife 39 years, Anne Therese Shier, of Traverse City; children, Jason (Janie) Shier, of Rapid City, David (Morgan) Shier, of Traverse City, Aaron (Abigail) Shier, of Charlotte, NC, Jonathan (Janice) Shier, of Kalkaska, Bethany (Christopher) Howard, of Traverse City, Maryanne (Michael) Smith, of Williamsburg, Frederick (Megan) Shier of Grand Rapids, and Joseph Shier of Grand Rapids; grandchildren ,Aidan, Madison, Kaleb, Nyah, Lincoln, Jacob, Logan, Anna, Evelyn, Audra, Alison, Kaitlin, Freddie, Samuel and Noah; sibling, Philip (Sandy) Shier, Tom (Julie) Shier and Kathy Robinson; along with many nieces and nephews.
Fred loved and respected William and Virginia Alger, his father and mother in law.
The Shier family will receive friends at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home on Thursday, June 13, 2013, from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., with a 7:00 P.M. Prayer Service.
A Memorial Service will be held at the New Hope Community Church in Williamsburg on Friday, June 14, 2013, at 11:00 A.M., with visitation one hour prior to the service. Pastor Craig Trierweiler will officiate.
Presentation of the American Flag will follow by V. F. W. Cherryland Post #2780.
Cremation has taken place.
In lieu of flowers, and because of Fred's deep love for children, memorials may be directed to the 1:17 Center for Global Adoptions or LOCO Ministries, serving the orphans of Chihuahuas, Mexico. Envelopes may be obtained either at the funeral home or church.
