Arnie Raphel died Aug. 17, 1988 in a plane crash while serving as United States Ambassador to Pakistan.  He was a diplomate with the U S State Department, frequently at the center of diplomatic crises in his 22 year career.  He had played a indispensable role in obtaining the release of the 52 hostages during the Iran hostage crises and was also co-chairman of the 25 member interagency group set up in June 1985 to deal with the hijacking of TWA Flight 847.
