After graduating from Troy High School, Richard served a two-year tour of duty in Vietnam. When he returned home he moved to California, where he was an avid sportsman, mountain climber, motorcyclist, and diver. He later returned home to New York State and obtained employment at Stratton Mountain. He was tragically killed in 1977 by a drunk driver while motorcycling home from work. He was unmarried and had no children.
