Cooney, Richard J. WYNANTSKILL Richard J. Cooney, 71, of Main Avenue died Thursday, April 19, 2018, at his daughter's residence after an extended battle with COPD. Born in Troy, he was son of the late John James Cooney and Margery Malone Cooney. He had resided in Troy most his life, was a 1965 graduate of Troy High School and attended Hudson Valley Community College for a semester before enlisting in the United States Marine Corps, proudly serving during the Vietnam War. Richard was a firefighter for the City of Troy, Fire Company Engine # 4 serving his community for fifteen years from 1972 and retiring in 1987. He was a member of the Troy Retired Firefighters Association, Inc. Richard was a charismatic man's man; a dedicated N.Y. Yankees fan, who enjoyed watching and betting the horses at Saratoga Race Track. He was a man of honor eternally proud of his Country, the City of Troy and his Irish heritage. He could tell a story like no other and had a knack for connecting with many. Above all, his family meant the world to him and he was equally loved in return. Survivors include his children, Charlene (William) Darmetko, Troy, Kristin (Kenneth Jr.) McGivern, Wynantskill, Jill (Jerry) Harris, Orlando, Fla., and DaVona (James) Francis, Troy; his grandchildren, Amanda, Casey, Dakota, Dalton, Jordan, Jaiden, Bryan, Austin and Ella Grace; his great-grandchildren, Madisyn, Peyton, Sophia, Oliver and Penelope; his sister, Kristin (Steven) Ayotte; his brothers, Robert, Kevin, Brian, and Michael Cooney; his brother-in-law, Ronald McEvilly Sr.; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his siblings, Erin E. McEvilly, Shaun and John Cooney. Relatives and friends may call at the Bryce Funeral Home, Inc., 276 Pawling Ave., Troy on Sunday, April 22, from 4 - 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, at 10:30 a.m. in the Sacred Heart Church 475 Pawling Ave., Troy with Reverend John Yanas, Pastor, officiating. Interment will be in St. Peter's Cemetery, Troy. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of Richard J. Cooney to the Retired Professional Fire Fighters Cancer Fund, 4 Loretta Dr., Binghamton, NY, 13905 or the Wynantskill Fire Department, P.O. Box 174 Wynantskill, NY 12198.
