I joined the Navy out of high school, after receiving what I think was a mercy graduation. I took the whole rebellious 60's thing to heart and quit doing much school work my senior year, so college wasn't in the cards. I spent 7+ years in the service, mostly stateside, but did cruise the Tonkin Gulf for a few months in '72. Ended up in Pensacola, FL and opted out in '76. Went to college there, graduating with a BSc in '81, and taking a job as a biologist for the Army Corps of Engineers in Puerto Rico. From there I went to graduate school in Madison, WI, getting a doctorate in botany in '89. Got married in '86. Went to Cornell for a post-doc for three years, then was offered a teaching/research position in a plant biology research institute at the University of Montreal in Quebec. Taught there from '93-'99, then returned to the U.S. (Massachusetts.) Worked briefly as a brewer for a small microbrewery, then went on to get a teaching certificate and work as a Science/Math specialist at a small, rural school in Rowe, MA. Three years ago I was "given" a regular classroom there and have been teaching a combined fifth and sixth grade class ever since. My wife and I had two boys in Canada, who are now 13 and 17. Great kids and I believe I'll survive their adolescence, too. We were divorced in 2008 and I have since remarried and am living with my wife, Jane Brodwyn, in Northampton, MA. I've become interested in non-electrified woodworking, using only hand tools, so I spend my free time in the shop when I can.
