Jennifer was killed by a college classmate on a trip to Romania, I believe in either 1999/2000. The Arizona Daily Star published a series of articles on the difficulties her family went through to have her returned to the United States. The clippings are still in my 1991 yearbook. Jen is someone I always remember fondly for her love of Basketball and the Celtics, her omnipresent smile, and she never once gave me a hard time about me just being me. When my mother told me about it and showed me the articles while I was home on leave, I had to sit down from the shock. -Joseph Chuck Daly

Jenny Hoffman died in 1996. Her memorial was held in early December, 1996.

A former attendee of the church misinterpreted her 'AGAPE' expressions of "I love you," (brother), and when she coordinated a European vacation with a few=day stop at his parents' home, he sent out wedding invitations. When he discovered his err, he was so devasted, he murdered her with a dumbbell while she slept, and then hung himself. The night before, she had tried frantically to change her travel plans, but the agency was uncooperative. With no place else to stay, she tried to sleep on more night in his parents' home.

Senator John McCain personally negotiated for the return of her body to the United States when the Romanian government declined to be cooperative.

Her parents relocated to the east coast. To my knowledge, she was an only child.

During my own father's battle with cancer, she often shared the Gospel with me; my ears weren't ready to listen.

At her funeral, several classmates appeared.

It was the first time I would enter a protestant church that preached Christ. It was the first time I was welcomed with sincere love by a very masculine guy, who was married to a then-co-anchor of a Tucson Christian radio network.

Calvary Chapel on Julian.

Led to my Salvation in April 1998.

I look forward to seeing Ms. Hoffman again someday.

thanks for the correction.  All my yearbooks etc are down in Tucson, (14 hour drive off), so I had to go off of human memory.  Which is suspect even at the best of times.

Fifteen years ago tonight, I attended Jenny's memorial service.  I had not seen her since our senior year, sadly, and I wanted to be close to her.  I think of Jenny every day, and when I think of her, I also remember the bright and genuine smile, as well as the beautiful eyes, and the moments of true friendship at Santa Rita, which she shared with me...

I have mourned for Jenny all these years.  A unique and virtuous, beautiful young girl.  I often imagine the life of achievement she would have had, a life of personal triumph and professional discovery, a life that was just beginning...

And yet, I remember all of the time that, somewhere in heaven, my friend Jenny is stronger than ever...

I think I can say that I love her.  The world needed more persons like her, not less, then as now...
