Velma Carter (Pate) was a very good friend. We met when I moved from the inner city area to 89th E. Ave. It was the summer before the 7th grade. We met that summer but didn't become close friends until the 7th grade. We lived 2 blocks apart and she sort of took me on as a close brother. She was a real sweet heart. I miss her. Oh, and to avoid any confusion, (Pate) was her birth name, not her married name. Her parents divorced and her mother remarried when we were still at Bell Jr. High.
That's interesting, Bill. (See previous post.) I met Velma in high school. We became good friends and we hung out a lot. ( she had amazing hair and the longest eye-lashes) Her step-dad raced cars so we went to the race track a lot together and Velma taught me about Funny Cars and Double A Dragsters. I even got to ride in one (Funny Car) down the drag strip with a driver once. It was exciting to feel the power of a car like that. She was fun and funny. She was sensitive yet strong. Really had a bigger persona than an ordinary observer would have guessed. We had different paths in life and lost touch, but she was a good friend when I needed one. I was sad to hear of her health challenges and her passing.
