
CARTHAGE - Genevieve Lucinda "Jenny Lou" Halko, 52, of Old State Road, passed away on Wednesday morning, October 17, 2012, surrounded by her family at Lewis County General Hospital, after a two and a half year battle with breast cancer.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, October 21, 2012 at Iseneker Funeral Home, Inc. 5702 Waters Road, Lowville. There will be no calling hours. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family. A gathering will immediately follow the funeral service at the Carthage Elks Lodge. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Friends of Lewis County Hospice, for the creation of a Palliative Care Room, P.O. Box 266, Lowville, NY 13367.
She is survived by her husband of 21 years, David; a stepson, Joshua Halko and Justin of Beaver Falls; a stepdaughter and her fiance, Janelle Halko and Chris of Battle Creek, MI; her parents, John and Agnes Teal of Brantingham; her siblings, twin sisters, Mary and Wayne Ernst; and Jackie and Bob Aden, all of Lyons Falls; Margaret "Podgie" Gorczyca of Lyons Falls; Nancy and Keith Mooney of Port Leyden; Michael and Kim Teal of Brantingham; Terry and Bill Kohl of Port Leyden; Joseph and Robin Teal of Glenfield; her father-in-law, Donald Halko of Carthage; brothers and sisters-in-law, Daryl and Penny Halko; Dennis and Ginger Halko; Darren and Jen Halko; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Carrie and Stanley Zehr; special foster children, Justin, Jeffrey, and Jeremy; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Jenny is predeceased by a brother, John William Teal, who died in infancy, and by a brother-in-law, Rodney Gorczyca.
Jenny was born on April 5, 1960 in Lowville, a daughter of John and Agnes Gaffney Teal. She graduated from South Lewis Central School in 1978, and attended Mohawk Valley Community College. She worked at AMF in Lowville. On October 11, 1991, she married David J. Halko at their home. Jenny ran Mama Bear's Day Care in her home for many years, before going to work for Carthage Central School District as a teacher's assistant. Together with her husband, the couple were foster parents for several children.
Jenny was a member of B.P.O.E. #1762, Carthage Elks Lodge, where she was active in fundraising for benefits. She was Secretary for Sunnyside Cemetery, Jackson Lane, Naumburg.
She enjoyed her pugs, camping, boating, fishing, gardening and NASCAR. Jenny enjoyed organizing family get-togethers, and enjoyed the company of good friends.
