Look up into the sky, and you might see John riding through the clouds, as if they were the fairways of Heaven’s golf course. John Alex Syty, age 69, peacefully closed his eyes for the final time with his life partner and loving wife of 45 years, Laura, by his side—whom he adored deeply, along with their sons, Richie and Will. John was born and raised on his family’s farm in Racine County, the third generation to carry on a legacy established in 1922. One of his greatest joys in life was passing that legacy on to his sons. His career as a golf course superintendent at South Hills Country Club began while he was still a student at Union Grove High School (Class of 1974), earning just $1.00 per hour. Over 52 years later, he retired as a valued, easy-going, and respected leader in his field. John briefly paused his early career to serve in the U.S. Army, and upon returning, he met and married Laura. Their marriage was filled with love, laughter, adventure, and more than a few shenanigans. John was also a devoted member of the Wisconsin Chapter of GCSAA since 1985 and GCSAA lifetime member for 34 years. John’s favorite pastimes included gardening, deer hunting, and fishing. He had a talent for fixing just about anything and a deep passion for restoration. One of his proudest projects was restoring his father’s 1940 Model H John Deere tractor. While working in the shop during winter, he built a giant sandbox so his boys could play nearby. Fall was his favorite season. He cherished family trips to Pennsylvania and spontaneous day trips—often lasting up to 10 hours—where he’d hand his boys fifty $1.00 bills so they could play crane games at every stop along the way. John is survived by his devoted wife, Laura, with whom he shared a loving marriage since October 22, 1988, united at North Cape Lutheran Church. He also leaves behind their two wonderful sons, Richie (Erin) and Will. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Glen, in 2022. John will be dearly missed, yet his legacy and spirit will live on through his family and dear friends. You never quite knew what John was going to say—his quick wit and sense of humor could catch you off guard, leaving you laughing when you least expected it. The family extends their deepest gratitude to the many medical professionals who not only provided care but also became dear friends. Your tireless dedication meant the world to us. Special thanks to Dr. Paul Durbin, Dr. Thomas Matkov, Dr. James Prahl, and the surgical team at Aurora St. Luke’s—especially Dr. James Klas—as well as the oncology team at Aurora and the compassionate staff at Aurora Zilber Family Hospice. We are also profoundly grateful to the Wee One Foundation for their support and generosity throughout John’s courageous journey.
