1961 The Hasty Heart

THE HASTY HEART

The 1961-62 Vancouver High School Drama Festival opened in late November with Gladstone's production of John Patrick's "The Hasty Heart".

"This comedy-drama of a heart-warming incident in the life of men in a military hospital in the war-torn South Pacific, set a standard difficult to equal."

The above comment by Drama adjudicator, Gay Scrivener, was echoed by all who saw this excellent producation.  The acting was mature, with characters that became real people: a high compliment to any student cast.  The stage-setting was a simple hospital ward, but by use of bamboo trim and blinds interestingly draped bed nets, colourful scarlet blankets and bed screens, and attractive jungle views outside each window, it was turned into one of the memorable sets we have come to expect from Mr. Alistair Ross and the set design class.

Special contribution to the total effect was made by the orchestra under Mr. A. Smaltz.  The music, carefully selected and specially arranged, effectively accented the many moods of the play.

"Hasty Heart" was a challenge, and a challenge well met.
