Beverley M. Kent (June 06, 1929 - May 13, 2016) Beverley passed away in her 87th year after a long twelve-year struggle with Lewy Body dementia. Throughout her life she demonstrated love, strength, and gentle guidance, and her personality shone through to the very end; even the fog of that disease could not hide it. She is remembered for her remarkable fortitude and grace by her son Rhys (Wendy), and daughter Alix Reid (Jim) and grandchildren Hilary (Jason), Haley, Bronwyn, and Owen. If she had been well she would have been delighted beyond measure by her great-grandchildren Elaina and Ophelia. Her devotion to her family was extraordinary.
After her graduation from Victoria High School Bev attended Vic College and then UBC, earning a double major BA in English and History. She took her teacher training at UVIC in 1964/65 and began her teaching career at Saint Ann's Academy in 1965 and moved to Reynolds Secondary School upon its opening in 1967, remaining there until retirement in 1989. For many years she was the head of the English Department and organized the debating club and the awards day ceremonies. She enjoyed every moment of her career, and spoke often after retirement of how she missed teaching. She cherished her many students and colleagues.
Bev retired to Duncan in 1989 and quickly appreciated and embraced the Cowichan Valley, where she made many friends and joined many clubs, including the University Women's Club.Bev's father, Alec Wallace, died of TB when she was three, and she was raised by her mother Reita and the extended Wallace family. We believe that this experience informed her entire life, strengthening her belief in family and loyalty. She married H. S. (Barney) Kent in 1953 and together they raised the family in Gordon Head. Barney died in 1989. Reita passed in 1996.Mom will be missed, but also remembered fondly for all that she achieved and generously gave in raising her children and grandchildren. We were always in her heart, and she will forever be in ours.Alix and Rhys will be forever grateful for the love and care given to mom by everyone at Cerwydden Care Home in Duncan. No service by request. Anthony Fantillo (Teacher)
Bev Kent was one of a kind...she was a wonderful, caring person and professional. She was my role model as a teacher and as a human being. She always made time for you. She was an active listener as we say today in education. She always listened to understand rather than to respond. She was an effective leader, without fanfare but with lasting influence. I enjoyed her kindness, mentorship and warm disposition...
