In Memory

Donald Wood (Teacher)

Donald Gordon Wood died peacefully at Selkirk Lodge on March 19, 2021, aged 93. He will be remembered for his kind heart, his dedication to 'doing the right thing', and for always supporting the underdog.

He grew up in the small community of Sechelt BC, with parents George and Edith Wood (née Oldfield). After working in a pulp mill for a while as a young man, Don moved to Vancouver BC to attend Normal School, where he met his wife of 70 years, Mildred (née Weisgerber). They taught together in Oliver BC, and Don taught Social Studies and Art. They also built their first house, ran a fruit orchard, and raised three children.

Don was an active member of the Kinsmen Club, fundraising for a polio pavilion at the local hospital, and he served as Chairs of the Sunnybank Senior Citizens Home, the Centennial Committee, and of the Library Committee. In 1967, just before moving to Victoria BC, Don was awarded the Centennial Medal for all his community service. In Victoria, Don was a dedicated high school teacher at Reynolds High School, where he taught History, Geography and Economics. His dedication to his career earned him the accolade of 'master teacher' from other teachers who knew and worked with him, and years later ex-students would come and thank him for being such a great teacher for them. Don was extremely modest, so his children only ever learned of his accomplishments through this kind of feedback.

After retirement, Don, who'd always loved art, became an accomplished watercolourist. He played tennis throughout his life, and he and Millie travelled extensively throughout Europe and Central America. He volunteered at St. Vincent De Paul, and he was passionate in his support for those less fortunate.

Don is survived by two of his three children, Gordon Wood and Vicki Wood, his three grandchildren (Kaylie, Madeleine and Thomas), and by his two great-grandchildren (Zachary and Nathan). He was predeceased by his eldest child Lynn Wood in 2013. His dear wife Millie died just eleven days after him, on March 30, 2021. It is comforting to think they are all together again. The family would like to thank the staff of Selkirk Lodge, where Don spent the last years of his life in their excellent care. The family is planning a celebration of life for both Don and Millie in August 2021. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to Our Place Society: https://www.ourplacesociety.com/donate
