Born in Albuquerque, New Mexico on Nov. 9, 1940
Departed on January 12, 2013

and resided in San Antonio, TX

CSM Sylvia Garcia, (Retired U.S Army Command Sergeant Major - went home to be with her Lord and Savior at the age of 72, January 12, 2013 at San Antonio Military Medical Center, San Antonio, TX.

A native of NM (presently living in Bexar County), she entered the U.S. Army September 1959, (she also served in Civil Service) serving a total of forty-one years. Sylvia was the first Hispanic female to make CSM.

During her career, she was awarded numerous military awards including the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Medal, Non-Commissioned Officers Professional Development Ribbon, and Expert Qualification Badge, along with Letters and Certificates of Appreciation/Commendations.

Preceding her in death were her father, John N. Garcia, and mother, Filameno T. Garcia. Survivors include sisters - Ida Holifield of Thedore, AL; Helen Lynch (Kevin) of Albuquerque, NM; brothers - Robert Garcia (Dolores) of Albuquerque, NM; and John Garcia (Diana) of Daly City, CA; nephews - David, Michael, Chuck, John, Chris and nieces - Angella and Melanie. And God Son, Nelson Holder and friend - Gloria Holder of San Antonio, TX; and numerous other relatives in NM. The family would like to send special thanks to all the medical staff that cared for her, Luz Herrera, Jerry and Pam McClanahan, and her North Carolina Extended family.

Visitation was held on Sunday, January 27, 2013  at Mission Park Funeral Chapels South. Funeral services were held on Monday, January 28, 2013 at the funeral home with interment following at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery.
