Thomas E. Shumate WADSWORTH -- Thomas E. Shumate, 84, died November 25, 2008.
He was born in Copley, Ohio on July 8, 1924. Tom was a strong Christian. He graduated from Copley High School in 1942. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II in the 747th Army Anti-Aircraft Artillery Automatic Weapons Battalion, and was discharged in 1946. He graduated from Wheaton College in 1955, earned a Masters Degree from The University of South Florida and Post Graduate Administration at Kent State University.
Tom was an ordained minister in various churches in Illinois, Ohio, and Florida. He pastored four churches and served as an Evangelist for many years.
He began teaching at Kennedy Jr. High in Cocoa, Florida, a school of 1450 students. He taught English, Social Studies, and Math. Later, Tom was in the Wadsworth School System for 20 years, and served as an elementary school principal for 12 years and a Bible scholar for more than 20 years.
Tom always wanted every child to be comfortable and challenged.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Molly, and son, Thomas. Also survived by sisters, Maxine Allshouse of Atlanta, Ga., Dorothy Marie Gibson of Uniontown, and Opal Monk of Akron; brother, Douglas Shumate of Tennessee; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be Saturday, Nov. 29, 2008 at 11 a.m. at Cox Funeral Home, 1376 High St., Wadsworth (one mile north of I-76 on OH-94), with Rev. Dr. Walter Chisholm officiating. Burial will be at Woodlawn Cemetery with military honors. Family will receive friends Friday from 3 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to either Haven of Rest or The Salvation Army.
