Charles S. Kreider, 85, died Monday, Feb. 12, 2001, at Rittman Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Mr. Kreider was born in Wadsworth, where he was a lifelong resident. He was a high-school chemistry and physics teacher for 35 years, with the last 22 years at Wadsworth High School, retiring in 1977. He received his B.A. degree in natural science from Goshen College in 1937. Mr. Kreider was an active member of Wadsworth First Christian Church, where he served as an elder, Sunday School teacher, and church librarian. He was a former member of Wadsworth-Rittman Hospital Board and Wadsworth Peace Fellowship. A former chairman of the science department at Wadsworth High School, he was past president of the Wadsworth and Rittman Education Associations, and a former member of the NEA and OEA.

Mr. Kreider is survived by his wife, Martha Ramseyer Wirt, whom he married in 1974; sons and daughters-in-law, Jan and Dorothy of Boulder, Colo., Gerald and Karen of Royersford, Pa., Robert and Debra Wirt of Middlefield, James and Sheila Wirt of Houston, Texas; grandchildren, Colleen Schwander, Valerie Mesch, Katherine Minielly, Emily Kreider, Rachel Olsen, Lindsay, Lisa, James, and Helen "Nikki" Wirt; great-grandchildren, Collin, Courtney, and Jordan; and sister, Mildred Rowe of Springfield, Mo. He was preceded in death by first wife, Lois Mae Etta Yoder Kreider; daughter, Susan; five brothers and sisters.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Hilliard & Mullaney Funeral Home, 174 N. Lyman St., Wadsworth. Funeral services Friday, 10 a.m., at Wadsworth First Christian Church, 116 E. Boyer St., Wadsworth, Rev. James L. Singleton and Pastor Leslie F. Critchfield officiating.
