WADSWORTH -- Stanley H. Coon, 68, died Saturday, April 3, 1993 at Akron General Medical Center.
Stan was born in Copley, Ohio on January 1, 1925 to Helen and Elmer Coon. After graduating from Copley High School in 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the age of seventeen. He served during World War II and saw action in the South Pacific including the battle of Tarawa. Stan rose to the rank of Chief Petty Officer. After his discharge from the Navy in 1946, Stan married his high school sweetheart, Betty Schweigert, his wife of 47 years.
He received his undergraduate degree from Kent State University in 1950 and a Masters Degree in Education from KSU in 1960. Stan began a lengthy career with the Wadsworth School System in 1950 as an industrial arts teacher. In addition to his teaching duties, Stan also served the school system as a bus driver, bus mechanic, and custodian. Stan eventually rose through the ranks serving as Director of Guidance, Assistant Principal of Wadsworth Sr. High School, and Assistant Superintendent. He completed his illustrious career with Wadsworth City Schools serving as Superintendent from 1981 until his retirement in 1986. He was a past board member of the Medina County Mental Health Association and Medina County 648 Board and was an active member of the Wadsworth Lions Club.
Stan is loved and survived by his dear wife, Betty; mother, Helen; sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas and Judith of Parma, Ohio and Scott and Dianne of Dublin, Ohio; daughter and son-in-law, Barb and Jay Couch of Wadsworth, Ohio; brothers and sisters-in-law, Floyd and Marilyn, Ralph ad Rosemary, and Leonard (Moose) and Judy; sister, Thelma Keenan; grandchildren, Jennifer Elizabeth, Eric and Kevin; also survived by a host of friends and relatives.
The family will receive friends TODAY 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Hilliard Cox Mullaney Funeral Home, 174 N. Lyman St., Wadsworth. Services will be held Tuesday, 11 a.m. at Grace Lutheran Church, 146 High St., Wadsworth Rev. Joseph F. Ertl officiating. Interment Copley Cemetery, where V.F.W. Post 1089 and American Legion Post 170 will conduct military services. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Scholarship Foundation of Wadsworth, 360 College St., Wadsworth 44281, in Stan's name.
