I knew Mel when we were kids, growing up on Grandview Ave. He was teased a lot and, as I recall, was shunned by most of his peers. My impression was that life didn't deal him a very good hand. He never found a place where he fit in and he left early. Rest in peace.

I thought I knew Mel well, although obviously not very well. He must have felt that he never fit in anywhere. Mel was loved by many of us, but obviously he had some pretty deep-seated issues. He hung himself in his attic home in 1977 and I'll never forget getting the phone call. I couldn't go to his funeral, because it was on the same day my brother got married, August 13, 1977. I cried all day. I will never forget his kindness and empathy for others. He just wanted to be liked. just like all of us back then. I'll never forget his kind spirit. this is coming from Jody's sister, Billie
