In Memory

Paul Porter

Paul Porter passed away October 9, 1991 at the age of 20 after a courageous battle with leukemia. A life resident of Wadsworth, he was employed by D & J Structural Contractors as a drywall finisher and was a member of Painters Local 841. Surviving are parents, Gary and Patti and brother John. Paul was laid to rest at Greenlawn Cemetery. Our deepest sympathies to the Porter family.

I really miss Paul. The last time I saw him, we ran into each other in front of the Post Office. He was in the middle of treatment, but of course wasn't in the least bit negative. Never thought in a million years that he wouldn't recover and go on with his life. I will always regret that I didn't take the opportunity to give him a hug.

Paul was a very special person and had a bright smile for all who knew him. He was fun to be around. Paul had a way of putting one at ease. In my experience, he treated everyone equally and with respect [and usually a little good-natured ribbing was involved]. God bless the family of this nice young man.

I would echo the sentiments expressed in the previous two postings from Felicity and Heather, and add the following:

The things I remember most about Paul were his sense of humor and his kindness. He was very friendly and thoughtful with everyone he knew, and always had a smile or a joke at hand. In school I think he was friends with just about everyone.

The last time I saw him was on the golf course at Rawiga Country Club (summer of 1991, I think?); I was working on the grounds crew there at that time and saw him playing through on #12 fairway on the back nine. Once he recognized me he ran right over to where I was working on the side of the fairway and we chatted for a couple of minutes. He definitely looked a bit on the weak side as he was going through another round of treatment, but he was so optimistic about beating his illness, it was really inspiring. Not too much longer after our encounter I learned that he had passed away...

Paul really exemplified all the things I loved (and still love) about our class- he was a kind, intelligent, independent thinking, and down-to-earth person. God bless you, Paul :).

Paul was one of the sweetest people I have ever met!! We dated for the 1st half of our senior year and remained very good friends after. He used to call me "Sweets". That is my favorite nickname to this day. The last time I saw Paul was 2 months before he passed away. He said "Hey Steph, it's Paul Porter. You probably don't recognize me." I said "Shame on you Paul for thinking I wouldn't recognize you." with a big smile and a huge hug. I thank GOD I had that opportunity. He will always have a big spot in my heart and I truly miss him.
