Seth- Tell me about it! Growing up in the "South End" and going to Franklin School was the best ever. My brother and I were NOT allowed to walk on Water Street, but we had to frequent Crites anyway (even though that was not permitted either) to buy our Garbage Pail Kids, Miller Field where we crawled under the fence to play on the toxic waste piles behind, the solar eclipse, the Space Shuttle crash, and the earthquake of 5th grade (why did everything happen in 5th grade)...school carnivals, Mr. Flaherty's paper drive, etc.
My brother still lives in Wadsworth and I've driven up Chestnut Street through the ol 'hood many times since they tore down Franklin and it seems so SMALL now. I can remember when being a school crossing guard was a HUGE honor and when riding my bike to Franklin to play on the playground seemed like a million miles away.
I definitely still think they should re-open the old Maries so we can get back in there to play Ms. Pac Man and Space Invaders and emerge smelling like week-old grease. There is much to be said about nostalgia.
