Janet E. Leone
Janet E. Leone, 67, passed away unexpectedly Friday, April 5, 2024 at Mid-State Medical Center.
She was born in Derby, CT December 29, 1956 the daughter of the late Eugene Leone and Anne Hollingsworth Leone.
She was a 1975 graduate of Sheehan High School, where she was on the swim, field hockey, and powder-puff football teams. In addition to being a cheerleader she was an athlete, of some note having broken many swimming records throughout her career starting in the Wallingford recreation league at the age of 6. She was active in school drama productions as a singer and dancer. Later she attended studies in art at the University of Bridgeport.
She had a long, varied career in customer service and retail businesses and was most recently employed by Big Lots where she had many friends and will be missed there.
She had an eye for all things beautiful which exhibited itself in gardening, making pottery, jewelry and painting. She loved ballet, tap and ballroom dancing. She was a fixture at the Wallingford senior center and will be sorely missed there.
She was predeceased by her father Eugene, sister Jean Anne Sjovall, and her beloved dog Lucy.
She is survived by her son Lucas Franchi of Coventry, mother Anne Hollingsworth Leone, her brothers, Mark Leone (Joan), Jonathan Leone and Denise Benson, nieces and nephews Sarah Sjovall, Matt Sjovall, Justin Leone (Val), Stephanie Leone and many cousins.
Janet had a big heart and good soul, was kind to everyone, and befriended many people. She left this earth way too soon. Please perform an act of kindness to a person or animal in memory of Janet, who was a blithe spirit.
A mass and celebration of her life will take place Saturday May 4th at 11:00 a.m. at Saint Paul's Episcopal Church on Main St., Wallingford.

Class of '75

Janet's mom was my Kindergarten teacher at Parker Farms and she and my mom had worked together as teachers at Whittlesey, so we had a family connection. Janet and I attended most levels of swimming classes together on those frigid mornings in the Community Pool, all the way through Lifesaving - as several others of us did. Fond memories of the quiet small town we all grew up in with friends like Janet at the center. I miss those times and will think of Janet often.

I took a lifesaving class with Janet's mother, and Janet was also in the class. When it was my turn to be the victim and Janet the rescuer, her mother thought I was being a bit overdramatic. I saw her lean over and whisper in Janet's ear. Janet swam out and dove under the surface. She came up behind me, slapped her arm around me, and dug her fingernails into my armpit. It was a very placid swim back to safety.

That is how I remember Janet - great sense of humor and no-nonsense. If anyone is in contact with her mother, please let her know that we remember her fondly.
