(John) Bill Moyer
Residing In: Lugoff, SC
Spouse/Partner: Ruth Anne; my lovely bride of 57 years
Occupation: Commercial Nuclear Power Safety consultant
Children: 1, my pride and joy David who has given me three wonderful grandsons. He is an Electrical Engineer currently More…living in KC Missouri.....just far enough away to ensure no babysitting duties for the grandparents.
Military Service: US Navy Submarine Force
Comments:

At age 17 I enlisted in the Navy under a program that ensured that I would get out after three years of active service. Well, 22 years later I resigned my commission from the Navy Nuclear Submarine Force, and began my second career in Commerical Nuclear Power. My last seven years with Progress Energy were spent as the Site Vice President of the H.B Robinson nuclear generation station in central South Carolina. Since Ruth Anne and I had both graduated from the Unniversity of South Carolina it was like coming home again. After twice retiring, I promised my bride that my working days were over, and that she and I would play around like a couple of kids. But, it wasn't long until my old friends started calling, looking for a retired executive to participate in their Nuclear Safety Review Boards. This was mid-2006, just a couple of months after my retirement. After saying NO three or four times they were persuasive enough to con me into NOT MORE THAN ONE YEAR OF SERVICE. Well, it's been nearly six years since I agreed to serve for a maximum of one year, but this will DEFINITELY be my last year. UPDATE: The senior execs at TVA continued to be persuasive with respect to remaining on their Nuclear Safety Review Board, and here it is 2013, and I'm still on their Board.....but this is definitely the last year!! I did it.....I actually did it. After seven years I actually did it. While celebrating my 70th birthday, and close to solving the mystery of the universe, it suddenly occurred to me that at age 70 you just have but a few years of good left on this planet. So, I am fully retired. Now what? I have taken up competitive shooting (rifles and pistols) while at the same time I load my own ammo...not a bad way to spend your time especially if the zombies are on the way.

School Story:

Having spent my entire 22 years of Naval service in the Submarine Force I calculated one day the total amount of time that I had spent submerged, completely disassociated from civilization. I will not share with you the final calculation simply because many of you would say 'Ah, that explains many, many things about his behavior'.

Who would have thought that the two of us would have made it this far in life on this planet; it has to be our angelic behavior as teenagers. I have so many wonderful memories of our past, and wish for many more years of good health and continued happiness. Happy Birthday my dear friend.

I remember John as if we were playing basketball or just joking around yesterday. He was such a pleasure to be around, and would always find the good in the people who he knew. I shall never forget his contagious laugh. The world is worse off without John. He enriched my life, and was a true friend to me and to so many others. I am saddened at his loss; he is irreplaceable in my heart.

How have we done it my friend? Odds were that we would be long gone by now, but somehow we just kept throwing 7s on the first roll. I have convinced myself that 71 is just the beginning of a life that we enjoyed in the late 50s, early 60s. Happy birthday dear friend...we're starting over. Do you think society is ready for us?
