Barry Rand, who helped diversify the top ranks of corporate America as executive vice president of Xerox and chief executive of Avis Rent a Car, where he was one of the first African Americans to lead a Fortune 500 company, died Nov. 7 at an assisted-living center in Norwalk, Conn. He was 74.

His death was announced by AARP, the lobbying group for seniors, where Mr. Rand retired as chief executive in 2014. The cause was Alzheimer’s disease, said his wife, Donna Rand. Mr. Rand resided in Stamford, Conn.
