Landon McMullan

Landon McMullan

Landon Hill McMullan was born in Raleigh, NC on April 1, 1952, the second child of James Baugham McMullan and Bettie Hill McMullan, both of whom are now deceased. He is also predeceased by his older brother Jimmy and his younger sister Elizabeth. Landon died unexpectedly on May 27 at his home in Chocowinity, "in the swamp,” as he liked to put it.

A graveside memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 6, 2017 in Oakdale Cemetery in Washington, officiated by Pastor Charles McCullough.

Landon was his own person, and almost all of his life he worked independently, repairing his boats for speculative sales, but for the most part he enjoyed buying and selling real estate. He was a free spirit often spotting the diamond in the rough that others simply walked past.

He was a talented guitarist, owning a collection of the instruments.

More than anything, Landon treasured his family and friends. He had a life-long love and respect for Cathe Lee Dickens, who was so central to his childhood and upbringing. He loved playing music and spinning tales with Michael Thompson, Ric and Kitty Carter, Cappy Sermons, Isaac Jennette, and a host of others. He held up his godfather Ford Worthy as a font of practical wisdom, and Billy Mayo as a special friend.

He took great joy in his extended family of cousins in Washington, including Mary Tucker McMullan Talley, Blount Rumley and his wife Mary Walter, and Mimi Rumley Jakubowski and her husband Jake. Outside of Washington, Landon regularly visited his cousin David Old and wife Zoe in Santa Fe, and their family. While there, he sometimes saw cousin Kathy Old Barnes and her husband Bobb. Out west he often visited his late brother's wife and good friend Regina McMullan.

Landon did not often see his cousin Patricia Rumley Thompson and her husband Johnny, of Atlanta, but spoke of her with deep affection. His remaining cousin, Harry McMullan, lives farther afield in California with his wife Stacey. He is survived by his nephew Stephen Rollyson, the son of his sister Elizabeth, and Hannah McMullan, daughter of his brother Jimmy.

Landon had a big heart, big smiles, and big stories truer than most thought. He will be greatly missed.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to a children's charity of one's choice.
