Gary Lester Boorom

Gary Lester Boorom, 73, of Waverly, died Monday, September 23, 2013, at the Waverly Health Center in Waverly.

Gary was born March 19, 1940, the son of Lester and Dahlia (Krueger) Boorom in Waverly, Iowa. He was baptized in 1940 at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Waverly. Gary was a 1958 graduate of Waverly High School. On October 8, 1973, he was united in marriage to Dita Woolsey in Marshalltown, Iowa. Gary dedicated his entire working career to fire service. He was a fireman with the Ames Fire Department for eight years. He then began selling fire equipment as well as teaching at the ISU Fire Service Extension, both posts he held for over 30 years.

Gary served on the Waverly City Council for 18 years and was currently serving out his 5th elected term. His years of dedication to the City of Waverly earned him the Lifetime Service Award, which was presented to him in 2013. Gary was also active with the Exchange Club where he had served as President. He was a devoted member of Prairie Lakes Church in Cedar Falls.

Gary followed many different sports throughout the years. He was an avid Wartburg Wrestling fan, enjoyed riding motorcycles, and cheering on the Iowa State Cyclones and Green Bay Packers. He also enjoyed PBR Bull Riding and chuck wagon races.

Gary is survived by his wife, Dita, of Waverly; two sons, Jeff Haskin of Grundy Center and Tracy (Leslie) Haskin of Waverly; one daughter, Cindi (Rick) Zimmermann of Madrid, Iowa; 8 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren; one brother, Dennis "Dex" (Karen) Boorom of Crocker, Missouri. He is preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, September 26, 2013, at The Centre Hall in Waverly with Pastor John Fuller of Prairie Lakes Church officiating. Burial will follow in Harlington Cemetery, Waverly. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 25, 2013, at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly and for an hour prior to services on Thursday.
