Carlton Jorgensen

5/5/2000 Throat cancer

Carleton Jorgenson died this past weekend (May 5, 2000).   He had spent the last year fighting cancer of the throat.  He had completed radiation treatments but wasn't able to eat solid food.  His weight was very low.  I visited him every other month at his apartment in Cedar Falls [for the past year].  He could just whisper, but we talked each time for an hour or so.   He hungered to be able to eat solid food.  I had loaned him a computer, but he just didn't have the energy to take on the learning curve.  He slept a lot, watched TV and read.   Carleton had great memories of growing up in Waverly.   Funeral is Thursday in Waverly.  RIP.   Milo Schield

Carlton and I were friends in Junior High and High School mainly through scouts. He was the best man at my wedding in 1962. In the 1990s, he stopped attending class reunions. I invited him repeatedly, but he didn't come. Finally, I just stopped by his house in Cedar Falls. Carlton was in poor shape. I visited him regularly during the 2 years before he died. He had trouble speaking and wanted to stay in touch with his daughter. I left him a PC, but that didn't work out for him. We watched TV and made small talk. He knew that the combination of alcohol and smoking made his throat cancer a major problem. I was glad to be his friend near the end. Milo Schield

Carlton's dad died in 2008.
