WENDELL E. JORDAN
The community of Fort Dodge has lost a beloved member with the home going of Wendell E. Jordan, February 19, 2008.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Gunderson Funeral Chapel. Interment will be held at a later date in Rose Hill Memorial Park in Whittier, CA. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Gunderson Funeral Home & Cremation Services.
Wendell was born in Aberdeen, South Dakota, June 27, 1926. His early educational years were in South Dakota and Minnesota. Following high school, his initial college years were at the University of Minnesota, followed by his completing a pharmacy degree at Drake University, Des Moines, Iowa. Post graduate work continued with a transfer to the University of Illinois in Chicago where he received his Master’s Degree in pharmacognosy (a science that deals with medicinal products of plant, animal or mineral origin in their crude or unprepared state). He continued to keep a current pharmacist’s license although he immediately followed his parents, Ernest and Edith Jordan into the teaching profession.
His early years of teaching were in high school in Waverly, Iowa, where he taught in the science department. From Waverly, he transferred to Fort Dodge High School where he continued in the sciences. Ultimately, he joined the faculty of Iowa Central College. His passion for teaching was carried into the sciences where many students were preparing for the medical profession. He remained at this college for the remainder of his professional career until the time of his retirement.
In addition to teaching, he had a great love for the outdoors. Particularly, he chose to spend many summer vacations on the Boundary Waters between the United States and Canada where canoeing was a favorite activity. Often these events were shared with other friends.
Bible reading and teaching were a very significant part of his life. Many years he taught community Bible studies in the local area. He was a member of Faith Baptist Church.
He is survived by one brother, Dr. Dwight Jordan of Raleigh, NC; one niece, Valerie Jordan Mangrum of Louisville, KY, and one nephew, Dr. Timothy Jordan of Raleigh, NC, and four great nieces.
The family wishes to express their appreciation to the staff of Trinity Regional Medical Center for their kindness and care given to Wendell in his brief illness. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Faith Baptist Church.
