STEVEN J. MANDELL, corporate partner in the Baltimore office of DLA Piper, has died after a two-year battle against cancer. He died on November 22, 2006, at the Gilchrist Hospice in Towson, MD. Steve was born August 23, 1958 in Passaic, New Jersey. Steve joined the Washington, DC office of Piper & Marbury (now known as DLA Piper US LLP) in 1989 and was named a partner in 1992. He relocated to the Baltimore office in 1997. "During Steve's two-decade tenure with DLA Piper, his excitement about his work and our firm continually served as a source of inspiration," said Francis B. Burch, Jr., Joint Chief Executive Officer of DLA Piper. "He was tirelessy dedicated to his clients, his community and his family, and we mourn the loss of our esteemed colleague, mentor and friend." "Steve Mandell was a lawyer's lawyer, someone to whom both clients and colleagues would turn for advice on difficult and complex issues. He was one of the office's leaders in pro bono work and community support. Steve leaves a legacy of wonderful service to clients, friends and colleagues that will stand forever," said Paul Tiburzi, managing partner of DLA Piper's Baltimore office. "Steve's groundbreaking determination paved the way for many attorneys." Throughout his career Steve counseled clients in the areas of health care and corporate law. He represented hospitals, continuing care retirement communities, nursing homes, physician groups, and other health care companies, providing general representation in all areas of health care, corporate and securities law. Steve was active in the legal community and served as a Member-at-large for the Business Section Council,, Maryland State Bar Association; volunteered for the Earned Income Tax Clinic, Maryland Volunteer Lawyers Service preparing federal and state tax returns for low income individuals); did fundraising for the 2001 Benefit Committees, Maryland Volunteer Lawyers Service and sat on the Executive Committee, Partners Club, Maryland Volunteer Lawyers Service. He received a LL.M. in Taxation from the Georgetown University Law Center in 1986; a J.D. from Columbus School of Law at Catholic University in 1983 and a B.A. magna cum laude from the University of Richmond in 1980. Steve lived in Baltimore with his wife, Lucia A. Mandell. He is also survived by a daughter, his parents, two grandchildren and four sisters.
