In 1957 two little seven-year-old girls had a chance meeting one summer day. Of all things, they discussed which one had a higher instep! That was my friend Beverly Gladstone and I. From that moment on we were best buddies.
We moved through childhood into our ‘wild’ teen years; laughter, tears, boys, school, the Beatles, sharing secrets, passing notes. Beverly used to babysit a little girl who would come to us and whisper very softly, "Beverly, can I have a cookie?" She made us laugh! From then on whenever we spoke one of us would whisper "Can I have a cookie?" On into our adult years then I introduced her to my cousin John Gilmore. How fortunate I was when they married and she became ‘family’. We shared more laughter and tears, vacations, Batts Neck, holidays, class reunions and so many wonderful memories. She was an amazing hostess and a wonderful cook. Bev was serious about our favorite family game Rook, and she rarely lost! For many years we had our cousins' weekend at Ocean City, Maryland where Bev and John had a condo. Those days were filled with the beach, boardwalk, music, craft shows and lots of crabs!
Beverly was the most loyal friend I ever had. She had strength, honesty, the ability to stand up for herself and others. She was never afraid to tell you what she thought or give advice, but when you made your choices she stood behind you. She helped me to learn how to live life to its fullest.
Most of all I loved her and she loved me. Her memory will be a blessing. Peggy Shilling Burgess
