I met Toni in first grade. We were friends through 4th grade, when I had to move to another school. We met up again in 7th grade, and we were best friends from junior high through college. Toni and I were roommates in college and she introduced me to my husband the first night back in our second year. Thanks, Toni!
I have so many memories of her. She loved Elvis, so she dragged me to all of his movies. She would always stop and purchase the soundtrack before seeing the movie because she said she knew she would love it. We also spent many weekends at her family vacation cabin and she loved to go dancing.
Toni and I had many classes together in high school, but we were in different sections in German. Frau Neuman gave so much homework every night, it was tough to get it all done, so we decided to each do half and switch the papers between classes. Toni had the class first, and I was in the next hour. It was a good plan, but many times she would leave for her next class and take both sets of notes with her—leaving me without any of the answers. Thanks, Toni!
In the spring of ’67 we went on a ski trip to Colorado and Utah. It was our first year skiing, so it was interesting. The first day we skied the most difficult run at Vail. I think I fell down the entire mountain. After the first day, I was almost ready to stay in the hotel for the rest of the trip. When we got to Park City, the weather was beautiful and we had a great time. Last year I was on a trip to Salt Lake with my daughter and we drove up to Park City. I tried to find the old ski area and hotel, but they were gone. They changed everything for the Olympics.
Toni and I lost contact after I married. Dave was a Naval Aviation Officer and we left for Pensacola just 3 weeks after our wedding. We ran into Toni and her husband when we moved back to Minnesota. We have gotten together many times over the years. Our last time together was for lunch on the St. Croix just a few months before she died. We were going to get together in October, but she wasn’t feeling well. She passed away in November 2013 from complications following a surgery.
Toni was married and had two sons. Robin is a former Army Ranger, and Ben is an actor and educator in New Mexico. She loved her children and grandchildren. Toni was a life-long educator in Bemidji schools, who retired about 10 years before she passed. She continued to substitute teach up until the fall of 2013. She also worked at Bemidji State Park for several years just for fun.
Toni is gone, but I will never forget her. Thanks, Toni, for all of the good times!
