Sandy Wahlberg and I were among the "faculty kids" in our class, although she had it rougher than I did since her Dad, Roy, was principal of the high school. For those who are interested, I would be happy to share a typical Roy Wahlberg Scandinavian joke with you at the reunion. Sandy, Sharon Barta and I were privileged to participate a three-person, condensed typing class from ? (who was the typing teacher?). I am sure Sandy and Sgharon goy=t more out of it that I did;. I still use the "Biblical" typing method - "seek and ye shall find"!
Sandy was my best friend, we lived on the ends of the same block in Normandy Park, an 80-home division off the northeast corner of Sunrise Park. Her dad, who later became Supt. of WBL schools, was like a second dad to me. I remember when we went anywhere with him in the car, he would play a game trying not to stop at any stoplight. He would slow way down up to the last minute and more times than not, he didn't have to come to a complete stop before it was a green light. Funny, I do this today and think of Sandy and her dad every time. I rode with him to my first hockey game: WBL vs South St. Paul. There was a big fight with both teams on the ice duking it out. I thought that was the strangest sport ever. Sandy and I shared a lot of private girl talk, played tennis together and even shared Prom. When none of the WBL boys asked her out, my cousin was more than willing to take her to prom. It was tough to be the kid of the principal. I can't believe she is no longer with us and, having lost contact with her, don't know how she happened to die. What a shock when I learned she was gone.
Mary Helens comment reminded of the many rides with Roy Wahlberg, He always had used so many puns. He told us it was because when he was in the service, he asked his wife to send him some books. She sent the Bible, and a dictionary. He read both from start to finish.
About Sandy, she died from cancer, multi-meyloma.
When she was visiting her parents once I saw her at church, She had a child at about the same time my daughter had a child, I told her that so many people thought I was Spencer's Mom. She had the opposite issue. people thought she was the grandmother.
That's what comes of having a child at 21, and having grand children between 39 and 45, and having mid life children.
