Barbara Eleanor Phiebig Ullmann, 58, of Vestal, died on Wednesday, September 1, 2004, at her home after a courageous battle with cancer. She was predeceased by her parents, Rose and Albert J. Phiebig. Barbara is survived by her loving husband of 30 years, Arieh; her children, Rhoda and Jeremy; her brother, Thomas and sister-in-law, Carole Phiebig; nieces, Rori and family, Sami and family; nephew, Jordan; her stepmother, Marianne Phiebig; cousin, Dr. Susan Weil and family; father-in-law, Walter Ullmann, Zurich (Switzerland) and brother-in-law, Raffael Ullmann and wife, Bettina Truninger, Zurich (Switzerland); cousins, Irith Friedman and family, Haifa (Israel) and David and Sharon Goldberger, Tel-Aviv (Israel). Barbara grew up in Westchester, N.Y. After completing her graduate studies she moved to Switzerland where she met her husband, Arieh. In 1976 the couple moved to Berlin where both children were born. In 1981 Barbara returned to with her family to the United States and settled in the Binghamton area. Devoted to her family she was actively engaged as a volunteer in the community, especially at Hillel Academy of Broome County and The Reporter. For over ten years she was a lecturer at Broome Community College teaching English as a Second Language. Her zest for learning and her interest in everyday language led her to resume her studies which she completed with a Ph. D. from Binghamton University.
Funeral services will be held Friday, September 3, 11 o'clock a.m. at Beth David Synagogue, 39 Riverside Dr., Binghamton. Rabbi Chaim Harkavy will officiate. Interment will follow services at the Beth David Cemetery, Conklin Road in Conklin. Shiva will be observed at the Ullmann residence, 4025 Franklin Place, Vestal, Sunday through Wednesday from 7 to 9 o'clock p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Barbara may be made to: Beth David Synagogue, 39 Riverside Dr., Binghamton, N.Y. 13905; Hillel Academy of Broome County, 4737 Deerfield Place, Vestal, N.Y., 13850; and the American Cancer Society, 31 Adams Ave., Endicott, N.Y. 13760.
