In Memory

Barbara/Barbie/Barb Mercer

With great sadness, we have just learned of Barbie Mercer's death on September 7, 2020.   From an email from Debbie Simon Konkol:

"After what we thought was a totally successful chemo fight with cancer, our beloved, funny, sweet friend Barbie Mercer died this past Monday, surrounded by love and friends, up in Alaska. Some of us were in contact with her after Michael Hala, her partner of many years and grandfather to her step grandkids, called to let me/us know that she was in her last days. We were able to get our messages of love and friendship to her (the phone was held up to her ear) and she responded with changed breathing and relaxation."

We will all miss her smile and her laugh!   There will be no services or memorials.  In the future, a nursing scholarship will be set up in her name.   We will post details of that effort as they become available.

Thanks Debbie for the notice. Barbie was such a warm, caring person. Lots of fun and not afraid of adventures. I'm sure we will all miss her. God bless you Barbie.

Debbie, thank you for letting us know about Barbie's death.  I am very saddened that Barbie lost a courageous battle with cancer.  She had a vivacious spirit and kind heart!  I will always remember sitting next to her in a meeting in Alaska when we were both employed in the Mat Su School District. We were both surprised to discover each other after so many years out of high school!  Her sparkling smile never changed!  She was one of the first people to contact me when my husband died, and then she followed up with encouragement for me to attend our 40th class reunion soon after.  She really touched my heart, and I'll always remember her kindness.

Barbie led an exemplary life full of service to others, friendships and adventures.  The world will miss her energy and her kindness.

Barb Mercer was a bright light and I will miss her. We met when she called me a sissy as I rode my bike with training wheels around Circle Drive. We'd just moved in and she was the first new kid I'd met. She became a lifelong friend. With her family, i went to Canada and expereinced the wild...something that she loved, too, that likely played into her choice to move to Alaska. She was funny, smart and a truly good friend. Rest in peace, Barb.

I have such fond memories of Barb and was very sad to hear of her passing.  We were in Brownies together and often played together as gradeschool children. We attended the same church and liked to sit together, apart from our families.  Several years ago, we went on a cruise to Alaska and I contacted Barb.  We tried to meet up, but the cruise schedule wouldn't allow that, but it was great to reconnect with her and share some special memories.
