Raymond Lee Owen, MD, 61, died Sunday, January 1, 2017, in Wichita Falls, Texas.
Raymond Lee Owen was born May 2, 1952, in Olney, Texas to Virgil Owen, a WWII Texas Soldier and Marie, a lovely French war bride. He was raised in Wichita Falls and graduated as the Valedictorian of his high school class at Wichita Falls High School In 1973. After high school, Raymond attended Midwestern State University. During his time at MSU, he graduated Summa Cum Laude earning his Bachelor of Sciences degree, majoring in Chemistry and minoring in Biology in 1973. He was also named Outstanding graduate of the School of Science and Mathematics. After graduating from MSU, he attended the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston earning his Medical Degree in 1981. After graduating from UTMB, Raymond entered the Wichita Falls Practice Residency Program and completed his residency in 1984.
Dr. Owen was a Family Practitioner for thirty one years. During this time, he was certified by the American Board of Family Practice. He was also a Certified Medical Director since 2003. In 2007, He was nominated for the Medical Director of the Year—AMDA.
Raymond was affiliated with the Wichita County Medical Society, Texas Medical Association, Texas Medical Foundation, American Academy of Family Physicians, American Medical Association, Texas Medical Directors Association, American Medical Directors Association and Texas Geriatrics Society. Raymond was the medical director of several nursing homes and retirement facilities—University Park Nursing and Rehabilitation, Promise Skilled Nursing Facility, Presbyterian Manor, Crawford House of Hope, Senior Care Health and Rehabilitation. He was also on the National Medical Director’s Advisory Board.
Dr. Owen was known to his colleagues, residents, nurses and patients as a compassionate and caring physician. Although his given name was Raymond, many called him Doc. Doc’s many passions included traveling with family and friends, his art collection, anything related to sports and his Americana collection. Although he loved to enjoy the comforts of fine dining, his favorite meal was always a simple hamburger. Dr. Owen will be most remembered for his intelligence, wit, and generosity. He always gave more than he received.
Survivors include his son, Joseph Robeson and wife Rhonda of Wichita Falls; sister, Jacqueline Owen Martin of Mesquite; two grandsons, Reese and Caleb. He is also survived by many cousins both in Texas and in Paris, France. He was fond of his staff at his practice and the multiple facilities where he was the medical director. He appreciated their loyalty and hard work.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, January 5, 2017 at Owens & Brumley Funeral Home of Wichita Falls. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 6, 2017 in the chapel of Owens and Brumley Funeral Home with Dr. Kenneth Warnock, officiating. A private family burial will follow at Burkburnett Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Owens & Brumley Funeral Home of Wichita Falls.
