Debbie Bowman (Shirkey)

It's been over a year since we lost David.  It's taken me this long to be able to write anything.

I met Dave in 8th grade at Truesdell.  He immediately became part of "our group". The funny thing about that is that we were pretty much a group of all girls....AND Dave...:) At least until we got to South.  But at Truesdell it was Us Girls and Dave! :) But, as I got to know Dave that was no surprise.  He was raised by a single mom, as his own Father died young of cancer...the same illness that took our Dave.  In addition to his Single Mom, Mary ( a GREAT LADY by the way), Dave had 2 older sisters.  So, he was quite used to GIRLS!

Dave loved Star Trek.  He loved Science Fiction. And he Loved Science.  He was very very very smart.  But more than any of that, or any of his other hobbies, he loved the people in his life.

Right after High School, Dave met Jessica.  He loved Jessica...but, as life does happen sometimes, he and Jessica went their separate ways after a while.

Dave met and married Sherry, Sherry had two girls, already teenagers (or close to it)  Nina and Norma.   Anyone who did not know that Nina and Norma were not his "biological" girls, would have NEVER known.  He was their Dad. They were his girls.

Again, as life sometimes does happen - Dave & Sherry Divorced...and in God's perfect way of bringing things full circle, Dave and Jessica (his first love) became re-connected.  And, they got married.   And about 2 1/2 years later...Dave got ill...very very ill....and I got an email on a Sunday evening....

It was Jessica, "Debbie, we are at the Hospital, Dave is very sick and they think it is cancer."  Can't be.  Not possible.  Six long (but short) weeks later Jessica allowed me the huge privilege of being right as his bedside as he slipped into heaven.  January 13, 2010.

I remember so many things about Dave, long conversations on the phone. In Jr. High and HIgh School I was the one Dave would call when a girl would break his heart.....Or just to chat, we were great buddies. After High School there were lots of lunches, talks, and many times we went long times without talking also.  Didn't matter.  Everytime we got back together it was like we had never been apart.  That was Dave. He was a great listener. A great friend.

I miss my friend. If you are reading this, thanks for reading it.  Dave is the third friend that has already gone on to Heaven before me.....I mean 3rd friend that I knew from High School.  First was Brad Delozier, many of you reading this knew Brad.  Brad left us in 2008.  Then, in 2009 my Sweet friend Linda Parret (she graduated from West High) and then in 2010 - it was Dave.  Life is too short.  If you are reading this, tell those you love that you love them.  Only our amazing Lord knows when your time is up.  Tell someone you love them today.
