Gene Ray Mudd, Jr., of Wellington, KS, left this Earth on September 23, 2025, at the age of 64.
We remember you not only for the time we shared, but for the lasting place you hold in our collective memory.
Orbituary published in the Sumner NewsCow, September 30, 2025.
Gene Ray Mudd Jr., of Wellington, died after a courageous battle with colon cancer. He was born on October 9, 1960, to Barbara Mudd and Gene Mudd, and was the oldest of three brothers.
Gene shared a special bond with his siblings, Glenn (Lisa) Mudd and Greg Mudd, and held deep love for his family throughout his life. He was a proud father to his three children: Cherish (Rocco) Schwinn, Autumn (Cory) Lira, and Jesse (Natasha) Mudd. He also leaves behind 14 beloved grandchildren: Desiree, Denelle, Rocco, Dylan, Jakob, Chelsee, Logan, Adisyn, Aarilyn, Natessa, Jaxtyn, Jaytyn, Jentsyn, and Jettsyn. Gene’s greatest joy was being surrounded by his children and grandchildren, whom he cherished dearly.
A skilled carpenter by trade, Gene spent much of his life working with his hands and building things that would last. His favorite place was Roaring River in Cassville, Missouri, where he spent countless childhood vacations trout fishing in the natural springs. His love for the outdoors continued throughout his life—hunting, fishing, and finding peace in nature.
Despite the challenges of his illness, Gene faced life with resilience and wisdom. When asked what message he would leave for others, he shared two pieces of advice: spend as much time outdoors as you can, and for men, get your colonoscopy early so you don’t have to go through what I did.
In accordance with his wishes, Gene will be cremated. A celebration of life will be held at a later date to honor his memory.
The family has requested that memorial contributions be made to Gene Mudd Memorial fund. https://www.sumnernewscow.com/gene-ray-mudd-jr-64-wellington-oct-9-1960-sept-23-2025/
