I hadn't known Cort well in H.S., but we became friends the following summer. He had that red Dodge Charger (or was it a Plymouth Road Runner?) with a 426 Hemi. He loved that car and was kinda crazy, but also lots of fun. Like so many, he was too soon gone.

I was living in Phoenix when my brother called with the news about Cort's passing.  He and I had been the greatest friends since Hadley, walked home with me every day pushing his bicycle, and stopped at my house for a snack each day. Cort actually became a member of our family...my baby brothers called him 'Cortney Richards'. He was a beautiful singer...I accompanied him on the piano the first time when he sang with Rita Ward in 9th grade! He could always cheer me up if I needed it, never judged me... a funny, crazy goofball BFF. Cort  dang in my brother PK's wedding, and then my sister BECKY's wedding. That was the last time I saw him. But it wasn't the last time I thought of him. He'll always be in my heart❤️

I think Cort and I met each other in seventh-grade art class at Hadley, when we had to draw portraits of the person sitting across from us, and we drew each other. I'm sure they were funny looking, but I remember his drawing of me as being not bad at all. Sometime in those years at Hadley, he would come over to my house in the middle of the night and knock on the window. I went out the utility room window, somehow with my father's car keys, to meet him. Neither of us could drive, but we set out in the car (it must have been 1 or 2am). The first time we had to turn we almost wrecked it (going too fast). I'm not sure how many times we did this, but it was high adventure. We didn't have classes together at North that I recall, but I do remember him from the Hadley years as a real character.
