In Memory

Calvin Shaffer

Dr. Calvin Ray Shaffer, age 65, died on September, 25th 2017 in his long time home of Birmingham, AL. Cal is survived by his daughter Katheryn Shaffer and his grandson Robert Bryan Ratliff III. He is preceded in death by his mother and father Aurabelle and Raymond Shaffer; and his wife Faye Hilley Shaffer. Calvin was born September, 30th 1951 in Phoenix, AZ. He graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1973 with a degree in History. Cal married his wife Faye shortly after graduation, also in 1973. Cal went on to complete his Doctorate in Medicine in 1977, and finished his residency in Omaha, NB. He and Faye moved to Birmingham in 1982 to start their careers and family. Cal was a dedicated physician and self-admitted workaholic. He was deeply motived by his passion for work, and most of all the love he had for his patients. Cal sharpened his skills in the Emergency room at Lloyd Nolan Hospital and went on to build a respected practice at Trinity Medical. Only after his affliction with Parkinson's disease forced his hand, Cal retired 2010 having spent over 30 years in the medical field. Above all, Cal was a dedicated and loving, husband, father, and grandfather. To their joy, Faye and Cal adopted their daughter Kathryn in 1991. With his Parkinson's he never believed he would live to be grandfather, but with the birth of his Grandson Robert early in 2017, he got to see that wish fulfilled, nothing brought him as much joy. Cal was also a godly man and very active in his church, Independent Presbyterian. A funeral is scheduled for Sunday, October 8th 2017 at Independent Presbyterian Church. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Calvin's life. The family would like to thank the community for the outpouring of support. In lieu of flowers please send donations to the National Parkinson's Foundation.
