In Memory

Douglas Holyfield* - Class Of 1956

Douglas Holyfield died in the fall of 1955.  He would have graduated in the cass of 1956.    Douglas had the misfortune to be a polio victim at a time when that disease was still rampart.  It was my pleasure and good fortune to be a friend of his and to add his name to our Classmates list.

His funeral was held at the Baptist Church on Hurricane Rd.  I regret that I can no longer recall the name of the church but make this notation, L. F. Addington, principal of J. J. Kelly  granted leave to any and all who wished to attend the funeral service and bus transportation was provided for those who needed it.  The church seating was full and many of us stood outside.   He was buried on the family farm not far from the church and later disintered, along with his parents, and re-intered in the Wise Cemetery following sale of the farm and resulting strip mining.

Curtis, it was simply Hurricane Baptist Church.  I didn't know Doug but I remember when he died.  I was 5 years old and this was the first personal experience I had of death.  He was buried on his parents' property, on the hill right above the house where I grew up.  I remember seeing all the people and the flowers from our yard.  I hope the gravesite has been maintained.
