The Dash
1960            —          2008
“There was once a man who spoke at the funeral of a friend. He referred to the dates on her tombstone from the beginning...the end. He noted that first came the date of her birth and spoke of the following date with tears, but he said what mattered most of all, was the dash between those years.” The dash for Synthia began on September 24, 1960 when she blessed the life of her mother, Sarah Lee Burnell and father, James Lee Meggett on Edisto Island, South Carolina.
Her early childhood education began at Larimer Day Care Center. She later graduated from Jane Edwards Elementary School, R. D. Schroder Middle School and Baptist Hill High School Class of 1979.
At an early age, Synthia became a member of the New First Missionary Baptist Church where she served joyfully, willingly, faithfully, and untiringly until she left to be with the Lord. Synthia loved her church dearly and gave of her time, talent, and finances to the very best of her ability. Synthia was a dedicated and committed member of the Senior Choir, Usher Board, Finance Department, Pastor’s Aides Ministry, Program Committee, Pastor Anniversary Committee and volunteer for the Restoration Committee.
Synthia was a loyal employee of Charleston and Colleton County Schools, and a diligent worker for John and Aimee Kornegay and John and Judy Nye.
Her earthly dash came to an end on February 2, 2008 at the Medical University of South Carolina. Synthia left this world praying to the Master and she knew that ,“To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.”
“For that dash represents all the time that she spent alive on earth and now only those who loved her know what that little line is worth.” Synthia Marie Burnell, a loving mother, a devoted daughter, a dedicated sister, a concerned aunt, a considerate neighbor, a Christian, a servant of the Almighty God and a friend to all she met…will forever remain in the hearts of her beloved son; Daemond Burnell; loving mother, Sarah Lee Burnell; devoted father, James Lee Meggett; dedicated sisters and brothers, Rhonda Winfield (Al), Jerome Burnell (Carol), Debra Burnell, Darlene Burnell, Jefferson Burnell and Monisha Burnell; Special and devoted God sister, Gwendolyn Bennett; 9 aunts; 3 aunts-in-law; 4 uncles; 2 uncles-in-law; 6 nephews; 3 nieces; special nephew; Javonte’ Burnell (JB); special nieces, Savetria Burnell (Missy) and Yasmin Williams (Neek); special God mother; Willie Mae Bennett; special aunt, Janie Curnell; special cousin, Gracie Horne; special friends, Flora Grant, Edna Mae McPherson, Eugene Middleton, Vickie Brown, Robert Bailey,    Carrie Robinson, Kathy Whitaker, Shirley Higgins and a host of other relatives and friends.
