Thomas Carney

THOMAS W. CARNEY, BOARDMAN - Prayers will be at 9:30 a.m. Monday at the Fox Funeral Home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at Saint Dominic Church, for Thomas W. Carney, 71, who passed away Wednesday, August 3, 2011 at his residence. Thomas was born June 4, 1940, in Youngstown, a son of William E. and Ruth V. Cumley Carney and had been a lifelong area resident. He attended Saint Patrick School in Youngstown and graduated from Ursuline High School in 1958. From 1959 to 1962, he served as Specialist 4th Class in the U.S. Army, where he was stationed in Berlin, Germany. The years spent serving his country left an indelible mark on Tom’s life. He enjoyed speaking conversational German and sharing stories about his experiences, especially the building of “The Berlin Wall.” In 1965, Tom was accepted in the apprenticeship Program at IUOE Local No. 66, Operating Engineers and remained a life time member. In 1999, Tom retired from operating cranes after being involved in many projects throughout the area. He remained active with the Retirees Club serving as treasurer. Tom had been a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians Division 6 for 25 years. He was honored in 2005, with the first Commander Barry Award and in 2006, as The Irish Man of the Year. He had also held the offices of Vice President and Recording Secretary and had volunteered for many projects including, the St. Patrick’s Day Parade, the Gathering of the Clans, and The Youngstown Feis. He was a 4th Degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus, Bishop Malone Assembly No. 826. He enjoyed motorcycling, gun collecting, but most of all spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. Tom leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, the former Teresa M. Schiavone, whom he married May 8, 1964, just celebrating their 47th wedding anniversary. He will also be sadly missed by his three daughters, Diane (Bill) Spidle of Akron, Maureen (Tom) Drabison of Austintown and Michelle Carney of Boardman; two sons, Thomas W. (Cindy) Carney III of Elwood City, Pa. and William (Barb) Carney of Boardman; a brother, Joseph E. Carney of Trenton, Mich.; seven grandchildren, Michael, Justin, Jessica, Gabriell, Sarah, Tommy and Amanda; and a great-granddaughter, Chloee. Tom was preceded in death by his parents.
