Emily died of cancer in 1997 here in the bay area. I was in touch with her the last six or seven years of her life, and she did tend orchids. She also loved horses and rode every chance she got. Another thing was that at totally different times, we both worked for the same supervisor at Levi Strauss & Co. I was there in the early eighties, and she was there before that; I can't remember exactly when.
