(From Carol Jackman; Aug. 19, 2010) Van passed away peacefully yesterday evening. He was his normal cheerful self almost to the end; always said thank you to us after everything that was done for him.
He had a quote from Robert Louis Stevenson taped to his computer for years that he said would make a good epitaph for himself. It fits him so well.
"That man is a success who has lived well, laughed often, and loved much: who has gained the respect of intelligent men and the love of children, who has filled his niche and accomplished his task; who leaves the world better than he found it; who never lacked appreciation of earth's beauty or failed to express it; who looked for the best in others and gave the best he had."
The concert Sept. 19th will be a perfect memorial to him. Other than that, we will just have a small family celebration of his life.
Carol

Whatever I can say will seem so inadequate. Van was a friend in high school and a better friend when we re-connected for our 50 year reunion. It was through Van that I was able to reconnect with all our classmates and get involved in the reunion, which turned out to be a major highlight of my life. He was much loved, highly respected and will be sorely missed.

As an underclassman, I remember Van's smile and kind words to us scranny kids. A gentle-man

Words are inadequate to express my sorrow to Van's family on his passing. We were blessed to hear him play his bagpipes at our class reunion just over a year ago...who would have guessed that this would be the last time most of us would see him. He was such a strong supporter of the reunion...Van's untimely passing makes us realize the importance of reunions, and reconnections with those we grew up with. My sincere condolences.
God bless.
Love, Joan

Carol,
Such a man will shurely be missed by his friends, his classmates and the universe. I am sure that his infectious smile, which I never forgot nor ever will forget, touched many and such smiles as his were a gift to multiply through others and to inhabit the earth. hip hip.

I remember Van from our high school years as a tall, kind, quiet, sweet natured, young man that I shared quite a few classes with. I did not know him well and yet I liked him and somehow trusted him. I did not see him again after 1959. However I will always remember that he took the time to write to me when he learned that I was unable to attend the 50th class reunion due to a serious orthopedic problem.
The fact that he offered his compassion, his expertise and his network to me was both unexpected, appreciated and I suspect typical of the man he had become from reading his profile and sensing his soul. I love the bagpipes, and nature. I am happy to know that he found both a career that suited him well and a wife with whom he made a fine family. I send my love to each of them and will listen on the winds for the concert in his honor.

08/28/10 Dear Carol and Family, I have known Van since I was a very young pup, you could always count on van always being there to help you when needed and he never changed , he was always the same, One fantastic person, whom I will never forget,, it is because of Van , that I am soon to go for total knee replacement surgery, and Van was able to explain things to me that none of the other doctors ever would of been able too, Van with his comforting attitude , his special way of taking fear of the unknown away from some one, and Carl Myers, helping also, I am only held back now waiting for a prior surgery to heal..I know that you and the whole family know how blessed you all were to have him with you for all these years , and he will be missed but never forgotten by so many, many friends, all our love and best wishes, Rick Frampton and Family, CHS 1961...
