Comments:

Early college years at the U of Arizona in Tucson, then the US Navy in Japan for a couple of years. Then three years as a DoD contract worker on Kwajalein in the Marshall Islands. After that I moved to Hawai'i to finish up the Bachelor's Degree while getting cheap rent from my parents, since Dad was stationed at Pearl Harbor. After getting the degree I took a job as an IT Manager for a private social/health club in Honolulu for nine years, then did a year consulting with a coffee roaster on its hardware/software needs (still in Hawai'i). I moved on to manage IT systems for the Ilikai Hotel in Waikiki (if you remember the original Hawaii Five-O that's the hotel with the balcony McGarrett stands on during the opening credits). I did that for three years, then started free-lancing, researching biotech businesses and medical procedures for several startup biotech firms. I'm now semi-retired but still willing to do research for a fee.

School Story:

I remember Mr. McConnell's French and Russian classes, his 13-second pep rallies and his autoharp.

I remember all the home basketball games when we Colonial Corpsmen would set up the bleachers for the fans after school.

I remember cleaning classrooms after school three days a week for $1.60/hour and thinking I was rich. Compared to the money I made delivering the Washington Star before I got the custodian's job, I was!

And I remember moving from Virginia to Guam three days after graduating in 1968 and not returning to the DC area until 1984.

Rick Sakamoto, Craig Dempsey, me. Possibly a History Club meeting had just ended -- notice Rick's got his overcoat on.

Behind TJHS, examining some kind of card. Notice the curious onlookers. Maybe there was a student ID issued?

Steve Timberlake has left an In Memory comment for John Heatwole.
Feb 24, 2015 at 12:33 AM

Mr. Heatwole moved to the Shenandoah Valley region in 1974. He had a website, and there's a page of stories about him and his work there.

He was a well-known sculptor, folklorist, historian, author, lecturer and tour guide. He served as co-chairman of the Rockingham County Bicentennial Commission and on numerous committees and commissions dedicated to preserving the Valley’s traditions and historic sites.
