I have been living and working in Ecuador since 1990. Prior to this, I completed my PhD in anthropology at University of Florida (UF) in 1979. I worked for the International Potato Center in Lima Peru (79-83) and had the delightful opportunity to travel almost non-stop for 4 years chasing potatoes around the tropics. I then joined International Programs in Agriculture at UF (83-88). While at UF I worked mostly in West Africa supporting farming systems research projects with training courses. In 1990, my husband and I were offered positions in Ecuador and we moved, intending to stay for only 2 years. Now, 26 years later, Quito is home. I divide my time between directing projects on community conservation and watershed management in the northern highland province of Carchi on the border with Colombia, and visiting my favorite beaches on the coast or rivers in the Amazon. I manage several rental properties in the town of CumbayĆ”, near Quito, as well as a rental condo on the beach in the small town of Crucita, a delightful place for a different kind of get away.
