DOUGLAS HJORTH

My career has been spent as a fisheries biologist consultant. Started primarily in marine fisheries in Delaware, New Jersey, and New York then shifted to estuarine and freshwater fisheries in New York and New England. Finished my career preparing environmental assessments and environmental impact statements for hydroelectric projects all over the country on behalf of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. Later in my career my primary role was project management overseeing the work of others that got to do the fun work (not that I did not like project management). I retired in 2015. I enjoy fishing, traveling, helping with various charities, and keeping up with my grandchildren.

I thought I might be able to run, but after a few weeks on the cross country team, it became clear that I was not a talented runner so ended up managing the cross country team and track teams for a couple of years. My son Matt picked up the good running genes, I guess, and became the second best high school distance runner in NH and my son Sean has run 10 marathons in 10 states. After my managing experience, I joined the varsity rifle team. We won the New England Championship in my senior year, and that was the last year that UMass had a varsity rifle team, as far as I know. Loved competing in all kinds of intramural sports as part of the Kelly Athletic Club; won the independent horseshoe pitching championship in our last year. Had some great times with my classmates during those times.
